We now live in a virtual world where we have a thousand friends but in reality just one. Similarly, on our birthday we receive a plenty of wishes on Facebook but not a single phone call to wish us personally. Its because of the reason that we now live in a world that our interactions are more in the virtual world with people i.e., through their Facebook or Instagram profile rather than any personal interaction. Therefore due to this limited interaction over social media, it makes us judge the person solely on their appearance and physical looks, through the picture they post, rather than knowing who they are and basing our judgments on their character or personality. Moreover, the social media has played a major part in giving a stereotypical meaning to “who’s pretty?” and “who’s good looking?” In order to meet these stereotypical looks that the society has set on social media we are using various methods from just editing the picture to going into major surgeries to get that particular look that is perceived to be normal and accepted in todays society.
In my ethnography project I wanted to talk about this prevailing issue due to the social networking sites and talk to my interviewees about what they feel about social media and its effects on making appearances and looks stereotypical for both men and women. Moreover, I would like to emphasize the impact on the children who have been born into the world where social media already existed and the effects social media has had to already make them conscious about their looks and there appearances at such a young age. Merging these topics and learning more about it, I hope to create awareness about this issue and hope to bring about a small change about how people should stop viewing others and themselves solely on the basis of the pictures that one uploads on social networking sites.
