We now live in a world where people have the power to make changes by using the help of media. It acts as a medium for them to express their ideas and views about the various things happening around the world as well as it’s promotes active participation by the users. As mentioned in the blog post “participatory culture” by Henry Jenkins media is a “magical box with a potential for creating a learning revolution.”
When something so powerful is available so easily, there is a need to channel the actions of the users in the most productive manner. The blog post states that half of the American teens and fifty seven percent of the teens on the Internet could be considered media makers. This shows that the youth has a significant share in the participation in making media. Therefore there is a need to make the youth today aware of the power they have in their hand and help them make the most of it. Even though many examples were given in the blog post, where the youth has made the change but most of them were done individually. Therefore, to encourage a larger section of the youth to make media there is a need to bring in schools and involve formal organizations so that these institutions can help act as breeding grounds for young media makers.
When a Facebook group, which takes about a minute and a half to be made, or a 140-character tweet has the power to start a revolution, the need to create and foster an environment for media makers becomes increasingly important. The need to encourage participatory culture of the cyber space is increasingly important in todays age. A prime example of participatory culture by media makers is that Egyptian revolution started by the youth by using social networking sites as a medium to create awareness and take steps to implement changes. Hence, there is a need for more media producers to create awareness among people about the issues and problems happening in the world and concerning the society as a whole. In conclusion, the youth today can use social media as a tool to make the changes they wish to see in the world.
